Chanel Oliver - K-6 Music

About the teacher

Hi! My name is Chanel Oliver. I am beginning my 1st year as an elementary music teacher and I am ecstatic that is at SCR-1. I just got married in May to my husband, Ben, who is a math teacher at the high school. We live in Memphis with our dog, Lucy.

I grew up in Shelby County and graduated from North Shelby High School in 2011. I then attended Central Methodist University where I received my Bachelor of Music Education degree in May of 2015.

In my spare time I enjoy reading and really enjoy spending time with my family. I love all things music and enjoy playing various percussion instruments and the violin.

I look forward to my first year as a music teacher and my first year in Memphis.

Be sure to check back on the music page often. I will attempt to keep it up-to-date and will be posting important information for all grade levels. If you ever have questions or concerns please give me a call or stop in at the school during my conference time to see me.

What we're learning...

kg

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten, we are working on learning how to use our four voices (speaking, shouting, whispering, and singing) and when it is appropriate to use each voice. We are also learning different ways that we can move to music.

1

1st grade

In first grade, we are learning how to tell the beat of the music from the rhythm of the music as well as how to count "ta" and "ti-ti." We will also be learning how to sing in different dynamics and tempos.

2

2nd grade

In second grade, we are learning how to name high and low notes (So and Mi) and how to sign the solfege for them. We have also practiced playing rhythm against the beat and playing the beat against the rhythm. We recently learned what a patriotic song is and how we should act when we sing a patriotic song. We sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" to practice what we learned.

3

3rd grade

In third grade, we are focusing on how music organized (the form) and singing in different dynamics and tempos.

4th-6th grade

The 4-6th graders are working on their note-reading and rhythm skills. A few of the classes have enjoyed playing Musical battleship on the Smartboard to review the notes on the staff.
