Philosophy
Democracy is the only acceptable way of life to Americans. In it, the worth and happiness of the individual are preeminent. Democracy recognizes the ever changing nature of society and it challenges its constituents through individual effort to build toward a more complete life for all.
Democracy is not inherited. It must be earned and learned anew by each generation which is to have it. The role of education, therefore, is apparent. Its purpose is preparation for, and the preservation and improvement of democracy as a way of life. However, may we never forget that democracy means more than just "freedom;" it also carries responsibilities of the individual.
All individuals undergo a continuous process of physical, mental and emotional change, generally considered growth. Growth, when directed, is called education. Education which has as its aim the social and personal efficiency and welfare of individuals is democratic education. Many agencies contribute toward the growth of individuals, but the school is perhaps the only one that has as its specific purpose the direction of such growth. It is the only agency whose chief concern is the development of each individual to the utmost of their social, physical, emotional and intellectual potential.
